Lakers: Following Buyout, Warriors Eyeing Jose Calderon

Posted February 28, 2017

We wish Jose Calderon all the best with his future team after his season with the Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers and veteran point guard Jose Calderon have reportedly agreed to a buyout that would make him a free agent, the Lakers announced on Tuesday.

It seems like the Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors are the front-runners to land Calderon after the Rockets cleared some cap space on the last day of the deadline, and the Warriors closed out a 10-day deal with Briante Weber.

Calderon has by all accounts been a solid mentor for the younger Lakers, and has never groused about his playing time coming and going based on injuries elsewhere in the rotation.

Weber will most likely return to the D-League's Sioux Falls Skyforce.

"It'll be a point guard", Steve Kerr said.

Calderon was previously linked to the Cavaliers, who instead will be joined by Deron Williams.

According to Bleacher Report's Ric Bucher, the Dubs would prefer to sign Calderon over former Golden State center Andrew Bogut if given the choice.

The 35-year-old is averaging 3.3 points and 2.1 assists per game during the season, but he is averaging a career-low 12.2 minutes per game for the Lakers.

On the other hand, I think this would be a great move for the Warriors especially given the injury history between Steph Curry and Shaun Livingston.
