Half of All New Mexico Planned Parenthood Clinics to Close

Posted May 20, 2017

- The only Planned Parenthood office in Wyoming will close along with another five offices in the organization's Rocky Mountain region, though officials said it would still exercise a presence in the state. They set up a task force that ultimately determined that without Medicaid funds, four of Planned Parenthood's 12 Iowan clinics would be unable to operate.

A spokesman couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Iowa's Republican Gov. Terry Branstad signed a bill last week that gives up about $3 million in federal Medicaid funding to establish a state-run family planning program that excludes clinics like Planned Parenthood that provide abortions or referrals.

That's the fundamental point of legislation like this: to close clinics, to end safe abortion access, and to leave marginalized women-mainly women of color, immigrant women, young women, and low-income women-with no health care.

This story will be updated.

Before Iowa, Texas became the first state to walk away from many millions in Medicaid funding for the goal of defunding Planned Parenthood.

"It is hard to believe that the state defendants would urge desperate women who reject the birthing option to avoid a clinic and seek the "safety" of self-abortion or back-alley abortions, but they offer no logic or argument to the contrary", Sachs wrote.

"We warned Republicans over and over again last session that their reckless actions to put ideology ahead of common sense would have a devastating impact on the lives of thousands of Iowa women, and today those warnings have become reality", said Rep. Lisa Heddens, D-Ames. Two suits filed past year challenged a ban on abortions because of fetal genetic abnormalities and a mandate that forces women to undergo an ultrasound at least 18 hours before having an abortion. The agency, which provides family planning services including abortions, is closing facilities in Sioux City, Burlington, Keokuk and Bettendorf. Many have long opposed the organization, some on religious grounds, because its healthcare services include abortions, although it receives no federal funding for abortions, as stipulated by federal law.

Research by the Guttmacher Institute shows that Texas's family planning program in 2013 served less than one-quarter of the women it helped in 2011.

A string of political scandals eclipsing the Trump agenda, and by extension the future of the Republican Party, have not distracted from Iowa's GOP-led efforts to choke off funding to Planned Parenthood. "For many Iowans, Planned Parenthood is the only access they have to health care services, and forcing these clinics to close will only mean families will have less access to basic medical services".

"If it weren't for the care I received there, I would not be where I am today", said Roberson, who moved to New York City in July to pursue a career in apparel merchandising and design.
