His wife, Brittany, shed some light as to why the four-time PGA Tour victor felt so relieved to have something positive happen.

"I get those four, five hours of just [caddie James Edmondson] and I playing golf". That choice has changed his life significantly.

Horschel said Tuesday that his wife Brittany told him that she was ready to share the couple's story after she marked a year of sobriety this month.

"Life gets in the way sometimes", said the former Walker Cup player. "It's just lot of stuff happens in the past year and this is just - this is nice", he said.

It was the American's first win since he beat Rory McIlroy to The Tour Championship in September 2014. "I'm not able to talk about it right now", he said. "I will keep his simple, 'I am an alcoholic.' I say that now without shame".

"One year ago, I began a journey to a health me; mentally and physically", she said. "He deserved to soak in the glory of his win yesterday, throw his feet up and just let out a long, deep breath".

Well, that is a question my husband respectfully has left me to answer how way I would like, if at all.

During a previously scheduled news conference before playing in his first Colonial, Horschel initially read from a prepared statement.

The PGA Tour player's initial reaction to his wife, Brittany, was that she didn't have to go public about her alcoholism until she was ready to do so. My wife and I hope that sharing our story will help other people who are either struggling with addiction, or their loved ones are.

"We look forward to working with Liverpool FC to help promote The Open's return to the historic links at Royal Birkdale for the tenth time this summer".

The Horschels have been married more than six years, and he said the past year has been one of the most enjoyable in their marriage.

Horschel's fourth PGA victory moves him up to 44th in the world rankings and also hands him a US Open berth after failing to qualify for last month's Masters and the 2016 US Open. "I've been a happy man". My wife is one year sober.

"It's unbelievable what my wife did". I called her and said, 'We don't need to do this.

"I obviously mentioned something about the a year ago. but we can dip, dive and dodge around these questions no problem, and we can wait until you're ready", Horschel told his wife. Phil Mickelson will be with Matt Kuchar and Wesley Bryan.

Briefly: Defending champion Jordan Spieth of Dallas will be grouped with two-time Colonial champion Zach Johnson and Pat Perez on Thursday and Friday.
